Hypnotherapy can be defined as a therapy that is applied while the client is in the state of Hypnosis. Everybody experiences hypnotic trance differently - it is a unique experience, but the client is always in control . While hypnotised you will be aware of all physical sensations around you, perhaps even noticing sounds you wouldn't otherwise be aware of. This state is achieved through different relaxation techniques, and is characterised by a pleasant state of tranquillity and rest, whereby the conscious mind has been ‘switched off’, and so the therapist can work with the Unconscious mind.
This allows for the therapy to achieve fast results as the ‘Critical’ (conscious) mind does not interfere with the therapy. Having said that, however, the therapist cannot physically force the patient to do anything that the client is not willing to do. This reassurance allows Hypnotherapy to be an extremely safe and un-intrusive means of treatment.
Hypnotherapy is a solutions-based therapy and so it focuses on how the client would like to change, rather than what is wrong with him or her. This way it deals with the client’s individual needs and thus can have a more lasting effect. Other therapies can sometimes treat each condition in a box-standard way and the client’s specific requirements are not taken into account.
A therapy session can last from one and a half hours to two and a half hours (smoking cessation), depending on the condition treated. Some conditions may be treated in one session and some more complex ones may require more. You should allow for upto two hours (except when stopping smoking), which will include the initial consultation and a discussion to allow the therapist to understand the patient and his or her problem.
